Sheriff Jack Myer[1] is an old-fashioned law-and-order type, under pressure to solve the first major crime in Chatham.

Early History[]

Biography[]

Summer 1999[]

On July 16th, Luke and Sheriff Myer get out of his car as they discuss Luke's dad. Myer assures him that this time is all about figuring out what he wants out of life, but Luke isn't sure his dad sees it that way. Myers tells him to keep trying and he'll come around. Megan runs up to him and Myers greets him. Her summer is complicated, but he's sure it's not anything she can't handle. He says goodbye then drives off. Luke later explains to newcomer Isabella that he was doing a high school ride-along program. His dad thinks it builds character, and he admits that drunk tourists do have interesting stories.[2]

On July 23rd, Myer goes to Brownsville Pub to buy into a pool game. He unknowingly scares away Megan and Isabella who are there with fake IDs.[3]

Winter 1999[]

On December 19th, Sheriff Myer talks to Luke who is filing at the station. He's had better weeks, but Myer knows he's a good kid and it'll all work out. He's made his share of mistakes and apologies. He advises Luke to just trust his heart and he'll be fine.

Someone drops a shoebox of sex tapes that Brent illegally recorded off at the station. Sheriff Myer has the shoebox open on his desk. Four tapes are inside, each from a different holiday. He asks Brent if these are all the tapes, and Steve tells him to think long and hard about his answer. He seems to have had trouble with that answer in the past. Brent admits that's all of them. Myer reminds him it's a criminal matter as some of the kids are underage. Steve promises that his punishment will be swift, but it's also a criminal matter. Steve insists it's more of a judgment call. Similar to when Myer's roof was leaking and the county didn't have a new one in the budget, so Steve put a new one on and kept him dry. Or when Bonnie was six months behind on rent they worked out a payment plan. That, if they're being honest, was an amnesty. Or when Steve scraped Myers off the floor of Steve's bar after he lost a big bet and made sure he got home safe. Myer appreciates all of that but is trying to do his job. Steve gets that, but when he tells Myer something is being taken care of because his word means something. He instructs Myer to get rid of the tapes, Steve will take care of Brent, and the story ends there. Myer repositions himself while Brent smirks from the couch.[4]

Summer 2000[]

On July 16th, Sheriff Myer arrives at the Landry house, but Megan spots him from her bedroom window and sneaks out.

A fisherman finds a body in the lake, spurring the local police to call in the coast guard. The paramedics move the body, now in a bag, into an ambulance as Sheriff Myer oversees the event. Steve pushes past the crime scene tape despite Sheriff Myers trying to stop him. He unzips the bag, pausing before identifying Luke.[2]

Two days later, Deputy Hardwicke delivers the coroner's report to Sheriff Myers, who learns the cause of death is drowning. There's an abrasion on his ear just above a gunshot wound, but it's more of a surface nick. Someone took a shot at him but the toxicology report says there was a serious amount of benzodiazepines in his system at the time. It could be pain meds or muscle relaxants. Whoever killed Luke wanted to make sure he was severely impaired before he went into the water, as they didn't want any chance of him coming out alive.

He calls everyone back into the station for questioning. He asks Parker about the last time she saw Luke. It was at the New Year's Eve party when he wore the 2000s glasses. He seemed fine and happy. Kellie thinks that Luke and Megan got past the stuff with the tape and were all over each other, it was really cute. He asks if she saw Luke leave, and Jeff, now in the interview, saw Luke leave with Megan. They seemed really chill when they left like things couldn't be better. As for Isabella being there, Amy saw her fighting with Megan so she left early. They used to be besties, so close, the whole town saw her and Luke together on tape. She could never forgive them if it was her. Tim didn't know what the fight was about but was bummed because Isabella was his resolution for the day. Another teen called it dope as people thought the world was going to end but it didn't. Sheriff Myer doesn't think Luke would see it that way.

Isabella takes a seat across from the Sheriff, Debbie to her left, as he asks her about her relationship with Luke. How they dated then broke up before he dated Megan. Then came the illegally recorded tape of them having sex. He muses about how things changed after that. She scoffs - she's a minor and thinks he should be more concerned about who made the tape. Debbie asks what his question is. After all, he's been through, he asks why she's still in town. She corrects his question as being why she didn't let herself get run out of town. Debbie stands up to leave, but Isabella tells her to sit as she's got this. When he talked to her back when Luke disappeared, she was ready to leave town once school ended. That's true, but Debbie got sick so she decided to stay and help out. He calls it kind of her but also convenient, given her situation before she came there. She went to three schools in three years and didn't even finish her junior year, having left before she could finish. She asks if that's all he has on her, and it is, for now. It's kind of hard not to notice a pattern of trouble following her wherever she goes. She stands up, but he's not done. She insists they are and won't be saying another word without her lawyer. The women leave and Deputy Hardwicke emerges from the observation room. He asks Myer what seventeen year old knows to ask for a lawyer. It's one who had to ask for one before.[5]

On July 19th, Sheriff Myer pulls up to the Landry house and Megan sees him from her window. Isabella watches from the airstream as he knocks on the door, with Debbie answering. She asks if everything is alright and he's afraid not. She lets him inside. The ballistics came back from the gun that shot Luke. It's registered to Steve Chambers, and he's at the Landry's house because there were three pairs of prints on the gun - Luke's, Isabella's, and Megan's.

Sheriff Myer asks Megan when she first learned Luke was missing. She learned the same day as everyone else, the day after the party. Isabella also talks to Myer, who asks if she had any contact with him up to that point. She claims she didn't, as they weren't that close then. He asks Isabella why her fingerprints were on the gun; Luke had taught her how to shoot because she'd never held a gun before. Megan used the gun last summer when a bunch of them went out to the cabin. He asks why everyone else's prints weren't on the gun, and Rebecca advises Isabella not to answer. He asks Megan if she was mad at Luke after the Christmas party, though Tom answers with no comment. Myer asks if Isabella wanted revenge for betraying her, or if Megan wanted revenge for him breaking her heart. The lawyers both respond with no comment.

Megan talks about the last time she saw Luke for the tenth time. They left the party just after midnight, parked near the beach, and she dropped him off at home later. An eyewitness confirms seeing them leaving the party, but as far as her dropping him at home, Myer shows security footage from the Chambers home from midnight to seven AM. He fast forwards through the VHS, though Megan never appears, nor does Luke. Myers questions Isabella about not being in the cabin since last summer, which she claims is the truth. He leaves the room and then returns with a backpack. He asks her to explain why they found her bag stashed in a crawl space at the cabin, the scene of Luke's murder. He opens the bag and removes a wad of fifty-dollar bills. He asks what all the money is for.[4]

On July 23rd, Megan and Tom enter the sheriff's station and she sees Jeff at the counter. Isabella and Rebecca leave as the duo are entering. In an interrogation room, Myer shows Megan the letter that Luke left his dad. It says he's running away and seeing family in Virginia. They found Megan's fingerprints on it, though she always said she didn't know Luke was planning to leave. Megan admits he did tell her about him running away. Yet all the times Myer asked, she lied. She lied about dropping him off at home, lied about knowing he was leaving, and now about the letter. Megan insists it was to protect him. She didn't know why he ran away, just that he was scared, but she didn't know what. Myer snaps at her and Tom insists they're done. If he wants to question Megan more he'll have to place her under arrest. Megan stands and leaves with Tom, but not before glancing down at the letter first.

The next day, Sheriff Myer knocks on Debbie's front door with a warrant for Megan's computer, as it may contain evidence of fraud. She shouts after Deputy Hardwicke and runs upstairs, following them. The sheriff and deputy leave with Megan's computer as she watches them go. She looks over at Isabella, who is standing in the doorway of the air stream, watching them.

Once back at the station, Sheriff Myer instructs a deputy to open a file called Y2K_Patches.dat as it might give them insight into what happened the day of Luke's murder. The file triggers a virus that scrambles the files. He curses the system.

He calls Megan and Tom back down to the station. Myer turns on a tape recorder in an interrogation room with Megan and Tom. He just received information that sheds new light on things. She's been playing fast and loose with the truth since Luke disappeared. He paints her a new picture. On January 1st, Luke disappeared without a trace, and Megan was the last person to see him alive. Megan insists he ran away, but Myer calls it her version of events. The letter backs her up, but Myer points out that it has her fingerprints on it. She was helping him, but he questions that or if it was just part of a cover-up. Tom asks if he has a point or if it's just a fairytale. Myer continues that Luke was the love of Megan's life. But by all accounts, their relationship was never the same after the sex tape. Too many secrets, too many lies, and it all got worse when she found out she was pregnant. Tom wants to talk to his client, but Myer presses that he believes Megan and Luke went to the cabin, and she told him he was pregnant. He rejected the idea of a baby with her, of a future with her. So she killed him.[3]
